Common Sense Advice

#1: Behind every good product is a good team. Remember, in this high tech era, that your software is useless without a great staff member behind it.

#2: Keep your software, cheap and simple.
Gargantuan custom software builds of the past are almost gone. Have companies learned from their mistakes? No. But you're getting there. The most succesful PR manager can still use a cell phone and a steno pad to conduct good business.

#3: The combination of great software and a great team can reap unlimited success. We all get sweaty palms thinking about companies that have gone from "who's that?" to "have you heard?"

Disclaimer: If you have a large sales force, if you are integrating with the web, if you have a complex collaborative sales process, if you need to coordinate multiple users, if you need to access corporate databases - then you need to carefully examine some of the incredibly powerful (and often expensive) tools out there.

Here's a few less expensive ones:

1. ACT (ACT is a great buy for the money and most small businesses will never outgrow its ability. ACT integrates seamlessly with Outlook and Word - it is the most comprehensive small business CRM on the market for the money. - It works out of the box and integrates with QuickBooks 2005 and newer. ACT allows for simple Excel imports and extracts)

2. Goldmine (Goldmine is just as good as ACT but with a few exceptions; it takes more time to learn, and to customize your screens. You really must learn the program. It works well with Outlook, but does not integrate with QuickBooks. It does allow for simple Excel imports and extracts

3. Microsoft Dynamics/CRM and Small Business Accounting with Business Contact Manager. (Can't beat it! Not very expensive)
